Find that Shoebox of Receipts – September 27, 2009

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

Remember when someone once said that by the turn of the century, we would live in a paperless society?  The computer would replace all paper.  Well, as you well know, that, ummmm, didn’t happen.  However, we are getting closer and the Internet now has some tools that will help you make sense of that pile of receipts and papers you need to keep up with.  At shoeboxed.com, they will scan and organize all of your receipts and bills and make them available online. You simply send them an envelope of everything, even business cards you want to keep up.  They will sift through it, scanning everything, and even categorizing it for you.  It’s safe, secure, and all you have to do is put the paper in the envelope.  I’m sure you’ll see more sites like shoeboxed.com pop up very quickly.

Everything on a Thumbdrive – September 20, 2009

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

So, your at your uncle’s house and need to write a letter.  You could use his computer, what word processor does he use?  Where will your letter be saved?  Stop worrying and grab your thumb drive, you know the little doohickie that you can save computer files to by plugging it into the computer.  Then, go to portableapps.com and download their “suite” of applications.  All of these programs live on your thumbdrive.  Any data created by them is also stored on the thumbdrive.  In other words, you could plug this into a friend’s computer, do all your work, and you would not have left any trace you were there on his computer.   The apps include a word processor, spreadsheet, web browser, email program, games, calendar and much more! To create your own portable office on a thumbdrive, for free, head to portableapps.com.

City-Wide Wireless Internet – August 13, 2009

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

Internet everywhere!  Internet everywhere!  We’ve been promised this by a lot of companies over a number of years.  And while WiFi has been around for a long time, you could never stray much farther than your house.  Well, a new technology, WiMax is here in Amarillo.  A company called Clear is the first to offer the service.  Promising speeds over 5mb, all you need is a little thumbdrive, like this to make it work.  I’ve been testing it for the last few weeks and am pretty impressed with the speed.  Keep in mind that one person using the Internet will rarely notice any speed differences over 1 megabit.  The coverage was good, even inside buildings.  I only ran into issues if I got too far outside of Amarillo and in cement basements – of course.  There’s something freeing about sitting at a picnic table in a city park and having full access to the Internet.  Who needs an office?
