Favorite Google Tricks – March 28, 2010

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Some people think that searching Google means simply typing a phrase into their blank and hitting Enter.  Well, little did you know there are a lot of shortcuts and tricks you can use to get your information faster, and even access info you didn’t know Google had.  For instance, simply typing movie: and your zip code will tell you what movies and their times are playing near you.  Typing define: and a word will give you the definition.  Typing phonebook: and a name will search every phone book in the US and give you phone numbers.  Adding site: and a website address will search only pages within that site.  So, if you only wanted to search Microsoft, you would type site:Microsoft.com and then your search phrase.  Type in a math equation.  Google will solve it!  There are hundreds more of these tips.  To see them all, head to ericspellmann.com and click on my blog.

Empowering Patients and Doctors

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010
The recent debate over Healthcare got me thinking about all of the useful medical resources on the Internet.  I’m not just talking about WebMD or the great government site HealthFinder.  I’m thinking of those sites that become uber-useful to patients and doctors alike.
Patients Like Me is an excellent example.  This site allows you to enter your illness and symptoms.  It will then show you how many other people are experiencing that symptom and what they are doing about it.  Think of it as a team approach.  While it won’t (and shouldn’t) replace your doctor, you can now easily network with others with your condition.
On the doctor side, I’ve heard great things about Sermo, the collaborative medical community site where physicians can get advice on tough patient cases from other physicians.  Think of it as a virtual “consult” where your doctor can ask a question amongst hundreds of colleagues in 68 specialties.  Once again, this site is only for MDs, but it is free!

Do a Background Check on Yourself

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

More and more employers, insurance companies, and even landlords are doing background checks on you.  If you are having a tough time getting a job or getting an apartment, these records may be the cause.  Your history is spread across a number of servers, but I’ve put them altogether in a list for you.  When you start visiting these sites, you’ll notice that most will allow you to request a free copy once a year of your own records. Do that.  You’d be surprised at how many inaccuracies there are.  Sometimes, a simple call is all that is needed to fix it.  Folks, you don’t want to miss a job opportunity or not get a loan because of bad information on someone’s website.  Check out your online records now.  For the links to all of these agencies and instructions on how to get copies of these reports, head to ericspellmann.com and click on my blog.

Paris in High-Def

Friday, March 19th, 2010
More and more of our world is being photographed.  Using Google Earth, you can zoom in on a significant portion of the inhabited Earth using Satellite photographs.
However, I just stumbled across an application that takes this technology to the next level.  Paris 26 Gigapixels, shows you the French city like you’ve never seen it before.  Basically, you are looking at 2346 high-resolution photographs carefully stitched together to make an incredible panorama.
Using the advanced navigation tools, you can zoom in and out and pan about the entire city.  You can zoom in close enough to see actual people.  Pretty Amazing!
But does this technology portend any future problems?  After all, how high is TOO high when it comes to resolution?  What if this type of live imagery could be viewed in real-time?  By anyone. Hmmmmm…..

Free Internet – The Contest

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

Google is looking to install free super-high-speed Internet in a number of communities.  That’s right, free.  They came out with a YouTube video announcing the contest a while back, but now, as the competition heats up, some communities are trying to stand out.  The mayor of Topeka, Kansas, temporarily renamed their city, Google for a month.  True story.  Topeka, Kansas, is now Google, Kansas.  Other communities are getting in on the phone, too.  The mayor of Duluth. Minnesota has jokingly requested all pregnant women in his city to consider naming their children, Google Fiber.  The contest is really cool, despite the jokes.  The winning community will get 1 gigabit Internet speeds to their homes.  Folks, that’s 100 times the fastest Internet you can get now.

I’m Eric Spellmann taking you to the Next Level.

Collaborate in Real Time

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Sometimes, brainstorming works best in a group.  After all, different people attack challenges, well, differently.  If you all happen to be in the same room, a large flip chart or dry erase board can become the canvas for your creativity.
However, what if you and your colleages are in separate cities.  For a quick and dirty collaboration tool, check out one of my favorite sites, TypeWith.Me. It’s really simple, and best of all, free.  Once on the site, invite whomever you want.  You will all see the same document. Changes by anyone occur in REAL time.  You’ve got to see it to believe it.
