Featured Customer: SOS From Texas

Friday, July 15th, 2011

“Our previous website did a great job of telling the SOS From Texas story. But, we needed more.

We needed a website that not only told our story, but helped sell our products too, and that’s what we’ve achieved with our new look from the designers at Spellmann & Associates.

Their team also coordinated search engine optimization techniques along with our social media endeavors and monthly e-newsletters for a comprehensive marketing approach, all of which have helped generate more traffic to our new website.” - Gary Oldham, owner

Visit SOS From Texas online and feel free to shop for a variety of home-grown T-shirts and other comfortable cotton apparel.

You’ll find them at www.sosfromtexas.com.

How to Find a Lost Cell Phone

Friday, July 15th, 2011

It’s happened to everyone. You lost your cell phone. Where is it? Well, what most people do is borrow someone else’s phone and start calling it, listening for the ringing. But what if you set it to silent? This happened to me recently. I could not find that thing anywhere and I couldn’t hear it quietly vibrating.
So, I came up with an idea: I put my wireless Bluetooth headset on that was tied to the phone. I would go into each room of my house and press the button on the headset. When I finally heard the little “connection” beep, I knew the phone had to be within about 30 feet of where I was standing. Then, I turned out all the lights, and called the phone. When it lit up with the call, I found it! But it sure would have been easier if the phone had some sort of “vibrate but ring really loud if I am lost” setting. Maybe I’ll email Steve Jobs about that.

Microsoft Word Tip: Easy Undo

Word TipsHopefully you’ve learned one of our most handy shortcuts by now, and that CTRL + Z will undo any change. For example, if you cut text, pressing this will undo it. This can also often be pressed multiple times to undo multiple changes. Likewise, pressing CTRL + Y would redo the undo!

Internet Tip: Easy Bookmarking

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

Internet TipsQuickly bookmark any web page in all major browsers by pressing CTRL + D on your keyboard. Pressing these two keys together will open the bookmarks or favorites for your browser and allow you to quickly place a bookmark for the page you’re currently visiting.

Windows Tip: Keyboard as Mouse

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

Windows TipsIf your mouse is on the blink and you want to run a program that has a shortcut on your desktop, just press the TAB key on your keyboard. Doing so will switch between the desktop, the Start button, and each of the items on the taskbar. Once the icon you want is highlighted, hit ENTER to open it. The only downside is if you have several icons. If so, you may have to press TAB several times before getting to the desktop icons.

Site of the Week: Quick Forget

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011
Sometimes, forgetfulness is a good thing – especially if you’re sending e-mail with sensitive information that you don’t want traced in the near future – like passwords, or even meeting times and locations for flash mobs, perhaps! QuickForget is designed to help you send sensitive information through email.
For instance, you can send a username through email, save a password with QuickForget, and feel comfortable sharing user credentials because all the information is not in a single location. You can have your “secrets” set to expire after so many views or within a certain time frame. Once your secret has expired, it is purged from their database and no archives are kept. Just don’t forget to check out our Site of the Week!

Focus, Grasshoppa!

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

I am beginning to believe that I have undiagnosed Adult A.D.D. I’ll be working on an article, or replying to an email, when some little link catches my eye, and before you know it, CLICK! (Insert 30 minutes of wasted time here).  The Internet has not made it easy to “stay on task.”  Add smartphones and Facebook to the mix and it’s amazing that we ever complete an online project!

Well, this week, I want to share some of my favorite tricks to keep you focused.

  1. Close multiple windows on your computer.  While the computer can easily multi-task, YOU cannot.  Only open the one program you need to get the job done.  You don’t need a little floating window off to the side showing your Twitter stream, Facebook updates, or stock quotes.  Shortcut: Hit the Windows-key + Home to minimize all but your active window.
  2. Turn off Facebook Push Notifications on your Cell phone.  When this capability first came out, I thought it was pretty cool.  After all, when someone commented on one of my posts, I got the equivalent of a “text” on my cell phone tell me so!  However, it became incessant, interrupting my train of thought on a regular basis.
  3. Only have your cell phone check your email manually, not every ten minutes.  In other words, when I am ready to check email on my phone, I simply click the email button and it checks right then and there, not at 2am in the morning, waking me to the important arrival of a random piece of spam.
  4. As an addendum to rule #3, only check your email at specified times.  Constantly switching to your email program to “see if anything new is there” will waste time and break your concentration. Make a personal rule only to check email BETWEEN projects, not during them!
