If your mouse is on the blink and you want to run a program that has a shortcut on your desktop, just press the TAB key on your keyboard. Doing so will switch between the desktop, the Start button, and each of the items on the taskbar. Once the icon you want is highlighted, hit ENTER to open it. The only downside is if you have several icons. If so, you may have to press TAB several times before getting to the desktop icons.
