Site of the Week: Biology in Motion

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

Need help assisting your kids with biology-related homework? Biology in Motion was designed by a biology teacher and the site offers animations, interactive activities and cartoons designed to make learning biology a richer, more engaging experience. It even has tips for teachers – and tips are welcomed, too. Why not check out the cardiovascular system? The online tutorial uses 3D animations to explain the basic design of the mammalian cardiovascular system. Good stuff!

InstagramIf you’re on Twitter even in the slightest, chances are you’ve seen people post pictures from the Instagram app, which is growing in popularity. Currently only available from the Apple store, Instagram makes everyone look like a “cool” photographer. Snap a photo with your iPhone and choose a filter to transform the picture’s look and feel. From there, you can send it to Facebook, Twitter or Flickr.

Monday, February 27th, 2012

Since we suggested it in a recent newsletter, have you had a chance yet to visit Mashable’s website? If you haven’t, you may have missed a great step-by-step guide on how to add birthdays from your Facebook account to your Google calendar. This way, you’ll never be the one saying Happy “Belated” Birthday. Here are the simple steps to follow:

  •     From you Facebook home page, click on “Events.”
  •     You’ll see a button for “Create an Event” and next to that a “Search” icon and drop down tab. Click that and select “Birthdays.”
  •     Click the drop-down menu again and select “Export Birthdays,” which will generate a pop-up window with a URL.
  •     Copy this URL by highlighting it and pressing CTRL + C at the same time.
  •     Next, go to your Google Calendar. On the left side of the screen, you’ll see “Other Calendars.”
  •     Click the drop-down menu next to this the option and select “Add by URL.”
  •     Paste the URL into the pop-up window and click “Add Calendar.”

After you’ve followed these steps, you should now see “Friends’ Birthdays” under your “Other Calendars.” From there, you can customize your calendar and even create alerts. Now, you’ll never miss a friend’s birthday again! For more information on Mashable’s step-by-step guide, click HERE.

Social Media Must of the Week

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

PinterestYou may have noticed on our Small Business Tech Tips a recent link to a Mashable article offering tips and tricks for cutting-edge users of Pinterest.  In case you missed it, I’ll highlight one of our favorite tips below. But first, if you’re in the dark, please accept this brief explanation.

Pinterest lets you organize and share all the things you love on the Web. Essentially, it’s a virtual pin board where you can plan your wedding, decorate your home, organize favorite recipes and so much more. Plus, you can browse pin boards created by other people. It’s a great way to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests. But, be warned:

It. Is. Addictive.

First, you have to request an invite and be accepted before you can begin the first bit of fun Pinterest has to offer. Simply click on the big red button in the top center of the home page requesting an invite and, once you’re in, the excitement begins.

Now, on to that Pin Tip. One of the best tools to enhance your Pinterest experience is to use the “Browser Extension.” To do this, drag and drop Pinterest’s Chrome browser extension onto your Bookmarks bar. This way, every time you come across something you like – whether it’s another cute kitten or a video of your favorite big hair band from the ‘80s – you can click “Pin It.” From there, choose an image, add a description and save the Pin to one of your Boards. Trust me – it will make more sense once you dive in and give it a try.
