Put K9 on Your Phone

Monday, February 21st, 2011

As most of you know, I am a huge K9 Web Protection fan.  This free software allows families to control access to inappropriate material on the Internet. Up until now, this program was only for PCs.

However, Blue Coat, the people behind K9 have just released free apps for the iPhone, iTouch, and iPad to do the same thing.  Now, you can let your kids use these devices without fear that they will stumble into something inappropriate for their age.

Keep in mind that in order for these programs to work, YOU, the adult, must set them up and establish an administrative password.  Under no circumstances, should you let your kids install this utility.  Think about it!

Folks, I’ve been using this utility for years at my own home and it works VERY well.  Give it a try.  After all, the price is right!

Site of the Week: Google Body

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

Google first gave us Maps…then, Earth…and finally, Mars And now, they’ve gone where no GPS has ever gone: the Human Body.  Here, you can view every organ and anatomical layer in high detail.  Unfortunately, your current browser may not support this ability, but Google gives you links to browsers that do. Enjoy.

Site of the Week: Custom Guide

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

Who doesn’t love cheat-sheets?  Today’s software is full of features many of us would never learn to use. My site of the week offers two-page quick reference guides you can keep by your computer. They even let you download some samples.  Check out their free PDF guides for ExcelOfficeOutlookPowerPoint, and Word.  To see their full catalog, visit their site.

Site of the Week: Simple Wikipedia

Sunday, November 21st, 2010

Wikipedia is one of the most comprehensive information archives on the planet.  However, some of the articles can get very technical – so much so that many students have stopped using it because of the complexity.

Well, another version of this online tome of knowledge exists:  the Simple English Wikipedia.  This site aims to provide the same breadth of knowledge, just explained a little easier.  For instance, a discussion of “pine trees” does not use the phrase “taxonomy, nomenclature, and codification” even once! Enjoy!

Site of the Week: Screen Castle

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

Have you ever wondered how “people” record their computer screens and narration for tutorial videos?  My site of the week, Screen Castle, allows you to create and share your productions for free.  If you hook up a mic to your computer, you can even narrate while you record.  While it won’t completely replace great free products like CamStudio, this site is dead simple to use.  Enjoy!

Site of the Week: Calculator Soup

Monday, November 1st, 2010

It has a huge selection of online calculators.  Whether you need to run mortgage amortizations or graph an X-Y curve, this site will have the right tool for the job.  My favorite is the Adding Machine Calculator.  Enjoy!

Site of the Week: Voyij

Friday, October 29th, 2010

Have you ever just needed a break and wondered, “What’s the best deal to ANYWHERE from my airport?” Well, my site of the week, Voyij, makes that search easy! First, find your airport. Then, enter potential destinations, price ranges, dates, and travel types. Or, just search for all deals. I was surprised by the number of “discount flights” that happen every week from my airport!

Site of the Week: Cloud Canvas

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

The Internet is brimming with online art programs. Most of them rely on Adobe Flash to work, which makes them unusable on iPads and iPhones. However, my site of the week, Cloud Canvas, was built in HTML5, what some people are calling the replacement for Flash. It’s really cool and has a lot of features. So, let your inner artist come out at cloud-canvas.com!
