Stop Bullying
Schoolyard bullying has been around since the dawn of time, but in this day and age of social media, bullying has risen to all new heights. You’ve likely heard about it in the news lately and now there’s a government-sponsored website, http://www.stopbullying.gov/, that addresses the issue. The site provides information from various government agencies on how kids, teens, young adults, parents, educators and others in the community can prevent or stop bullying.

Social Media Musts of the Week

December 12th, 2011
As 2011 winds down with the holidays, chances our, most of us are online sharing our favorite recipes, family photos and more via social networks like Facebook and Twitter. Now that social media has seemingly integrated itself into our daily lives, hang tight because its use in marketing endeavors will only grow in the coming year, especially with the introduction of Google+ earlier this year and its recent addition of pages for business. This opens the door widely for branding through social media, and businesses are taking note.
Google + for Business
In addition to using social media to promote their products, businesses are realizing the ever-growing importance of using the tool to communicate with customers. If they’re not doing so already, businesses planning for 2012 need to budget for social marketing and integrate it with all their online endeavors. Pay closer attention to blog posting, content marketing and interacting with customers even more frequently – because it could get you found in search endeavors. That’s because search engines like Google are continuously perfecting their algorithms – meaning they are likely to include social media relevance in search results. The fresher the content, the more likely your material will be found in search results.

Plus, with the integration of Google+, search results are getting more personal and customized to individual preferences. You may have already noticed that pages that have been shared by your Facebook, Twitter or Google+ networks previously now rank higher in your own search results. But the person sitting next to you may not get the same search results on the same word or phrase. That’s because social media is influencing your search results – and that’s why companies need to take heed and jump on the bandwagon.

Free Parental Control Software

December 5th, 2011

I speak to a number of schools and churches on the subject of Internet safety.  I’ve seen the statistics, I’ve done the research, so hear me when I say this:  I don’t care how good you think your kids are, you MUST have some sort of Internet filtering software on any computer they will be using.  Period.

K9 Web Protection

Trust me, they or their friends will try something at some point and you need to make sure it gets stopped, and that you know it happened.  My favorite software to do this is  K9 Web Protection.  It will automatically block any attempt for a computer to access an inappropriate site.  You, as the administrator can add other sites or unblock sites as needed.  K9 can even enforce the times during the day that the Internet can be accessed.  If you don’t want anyone accessing the Internet after 10 at night, it will do that.  And K9 is free.

Some other great kid-safe resources for parents to check out include KidzuiZuiTube, and TotLOL.  If you are looking for a great white list or need to give your kiddo a safe email account, check out PikLuk!

Site of the Week: Wakerupper

Wakerupper
Did you take your vitamins this morning? Remember to pick up the dry cleaning? If you’re the type of person who could benefit from a gentle reminder, Wakerupper could be exactly what you’re looking for. It is a telephone reminder service that aims to make telephone alerts as simple as possible.
All you have to do is enter the number of the phone you would like to be called, the time you want the call to be placed, and an optional 100-character reminder message. It’s that simple! You will receive a call from Wakerupper at the time you have specified and your message will be delivered.
While the basic service is free, premium features like recurring calls, snooze, and voice reminders come with a modest fee. Now, what was I supposed to pick up at the grocery store on the way home tonight …?

Google+ vs Facebook

November 8th, 2011

Google has been trying to break into the social media arena for some time.  Their earlier failed attempts (orchid, wave, and buzz) have never caught on.  Google+, however, is positioned differently.  It could actually give Facebook a run for the money.  See the Video.

Before you start, however, keep in mind you must have a Google profile to start.
Google +

Next, let’s talk “lingo.”  The terms you need to remember are: circles, hangouts, and sparks.

Circles - Here is where Google+ is much better than Facebook.  Instead of having just one big pile of friends, Google+ allows you to group different people into circles.  For instance, you might create one for Family, another for Church Friends, and yet another for Business Associates.  Once your circles are created, Google+ makes it very easy to post messages just to certain circles OR to everyone. Facebook has this functionality with “groups” but it is not as easy to accomplish.

Google PlusHangouts - One of the coolest features of Google Buzz revolves around video.  Using Hangouts, you and a bunch of friends can all get together in a video chat room AT THE SAME TIME.  Whomever is speaking shows up in a large window and everyone else is in smaller windows.  When someone else starts speaking, they instantly jump to the large window.  You have to see it to really appreciate how cool it is.

Google PlusSparks - Imagine having a feed of JUST the topics you are interested in.  When you have free time, you can always check this feed for something you KNOW you will enjoy.  Using the “Add Interest” button, you can slowly teach Google what you like to see, and more importantly, what you DON’T want to see.

So, will it take off?  Well, my view is that Facebook is too entrenched to actually be beaten by Google+.  However, Google is now paying trendy and famous people to generate “buzz” about this service.  You never know.  With enough money thrown at it, Google+ may actually take off.

“Working in the real estate industry is a 24/7 job and while I recognized the importance of having a professional and user-friendly website, I needed a team to walk me through the process the way I walk my clients through the purchase or sale of a home. Not only did I get a website that reflects AmaReels’s personality and purpose, I appreciated the online branding approach to marketing Spellmann’s team offered, as well as their flexibility with my demanding schedule.”
